ABSTRACT

In order to enhance pupils’ learning it is important to understand how theory underpins learning and how an understanding of learning theories is essential for the planning of creative and engaging units of work and lessons. As Rink (2009: 162) states: ‘There is no single theory of learning that explains learning or lack of it in all situations, and therefore there can be no single approach to instruction.’ Theories of learning can be used to support an approach to teaching. This chapter explores the link between learning theory and teaching strategies and how they underpin and facilitate the learning process.
