Pre-therapy: engagement and assessment
Many people experience psychosis. Some people go on to have suicidal thoughts and some go further, attempting to, or actually killing themselves. An understanding of a person’s experiences of psychosis per se is therefore not enough to explain their suicidal behaviour. A thorough assessment is needed to identify the factors that are specifically implicated in suicidal behaviour. These may be directly or indirectly linked to experiences of psychosis, their consequences, or to a wide range of non-psychotic experiences. Pre-therapy refers to the engagement and assessment stage that precedes therapy. Therapy refers to the idiosyncratic formulation of suicide and resilience (Chapter 5) and the delivery of the CBSPp intervention (Chapter 6).
