Formulating the prevention of suicide

The preceding chapters have considered the role of various risk factors for suicide in the context of psychosis. An explanatory framework has been presented: The suicide schema seems to provide a mechanism to explain the development, perseveration and elaboration of states of defeat and hopelessness and to prime suicide as an escape behaviour from such states. It is therefore the task of the clinician to develop a case formulation with the client, arriving at a shared understanding of how this schematic appraisal system may be operating to maintain a client’s suicidal state or how it may be activated in the future to increase the probability of suicidal behaviour.
