Market Time: The Need to Widen the Scope of Inquiry on Work

The debate in Germany is thus precisely about the relationship between time and work, and also about the role of markets for defi ning a new variability of working hours. Working time based on mutual trust is certainly the most radical defi nition of this relationship, as well as that of variability by common accord, since it seems to set aside collective regulation to a greater degree, even if it’s a bit more complicated as we have just indicated. In order to understand this evolution of variable time norms, this chapter argues for a broadening of perspective and to progressively outline the conceptual framework for analysing our materials.
