ABSTRACT

Most pupils, students or other learners within the education system are young: infants in nurseries and primary schools, children in secondary schools, young adults in colleges and universities. Even those who receive vocational or job-related training tend to be individuals in the early rather than the later part of their working lives. This association between education and young people suggests that education plays a crucial role in preparing individuals, not yet regarded as fully ‘mature’ or ‘developed’, for their future lives as adult citizens. Particularly in the context of a modern, industrial society, with specialised occupations, the education system is important in generating an educated and qualified workforce.
