ABSTRACT

The World Health Organisation states that physical inactivity has become the fourth leading cause of global mortality. It accounts for approximately 2125 per cent of the breast and colon cancer burden, 27 per cent of diabetes and approximately 30 per cent of coronary heart disease. Cancer remains the second biggest killer in the older population groups, with lung cancer the most prevalent for both genders, followed by prostate and colorectal cancer in men and breast and colorectal cancer in women. The public health needs of developing nations differ substantially from those of developed nations. The extent of the differences in the health of various sections of UK society first came to the public's consciousness with the publication of the Black Report. There is no doubt about it that reducing health inequalities is a complex area involving many factors and influences on health.
