ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a local initiative to encourage citizen learning about sustainable energy and homes in Bristol, a hub of green culture and policies in the South-West of England. Bristol Green Doors (BGD) is a small not-for-profit organisation. Bristol Green Doors exemplifies the orientation of the sustainability movement in the UK. Bristol Green Doors is one of many local initiatives fostering sustainability that mushroomed around the UK between 2005 and 2010. By the time Dan Weisselberg and Kate Watson started collaborating on Bristol Green Doors, nearly three years had elapsed since the first Green Open Buildings in Norfolk. Since the first weekend in September 2010, Bristol Green Doors has consolidated a core role, targeting homeowners through open homes events within the Bristol sustainable energy and buildings movement. Bristol Green Doors is an exemplary case of committed environmentalists reaching out beyond core communities of green culture and practice to educate fellow citizens about practical steps can take towards living more sustainably.
