ABSTRACT

The chapter begins by briefly exploring the nature of the Great Transition towards sustainability and the tension between macro and micro changes. The ecocultures have each sought to contribute to the Great Transition, Great Turning and Great Outshining thus moving from a world of peril to a world of well-being. It consider the roles played by intentional, putatively sustainable community ecocultures, before looking at the constraints they face, possible solutions and examples where such ecocultures are responding to challenges and opportunities. It is also important to acknowledge that many intentional communities are failing to deliver on their potential to help the Great Transition. The ecocultures carry enormous value and potential to support the Great Transition to a world of well-being. Despite all this, however, the potential of these ecocultures to play their fullest part in the Great Transition will not be realised until the society-wide constraints they face are overcome.
