ABSTRACT

We have approached this discussion of the knowledge base for health promotion in the United States by addressing three questions. First, what is the context in the country that gives rise to and shapes health promotion efforts? Second, what do we know about health promotion interventions? For example, how effective are various theoretical frameworks and principles that guide practice? Where can programmes be effectively deployed? Which intervention strategies and evaluation methods work best? What are the issues when working with special populations? Third, what models and conceptual approaches will shape health promotion in the future and serve as a basis for assessing quality and effectiveness?
