What Can Education Do?
Education that is relevant to the relationship between education, nature and society may occur in almost any discipline or area of study, and take place at any age. However, for the purposes of this chapter the focus will be on education that specifi cally targets the area. Such education has been known by a number of different designations at different times and places, of which the most widely known and persistent are ‘environmental education’ and ‘education for sustainable development’. The former preceded the latter, and still endures as a distinct fi eld. The annual conference of the North American Association for Environmental Education, for example, is invariably a fascinating, vivid and varied affair.
