ABSTRACT

China’s 5,000 years of culture and history have left a legacy in its people which has powerful influences today. The most relevant period, however, starts in 1949 with the overthrow of Chiang Kai-shek and the rise to power of the Communist Party under the leadership of Mao Tse-tung. Before the split with the USSR in 1960, the Soviet planning system had become firmly entrenched in China, and a complete system of state ownership and control had been introduced.
