ABSTRACT

BARRY AND TRACY Tracy made the phone call to the treatment program that specializes in Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The only thing preventing her from taking her two children and leaving her husband, she said, was the possibility that he suffered from undiagnosed ADHD. Her condition for staying in the marriage, at least short-term: Barry seeking an evaluation and, if diagnosed, following treatment recommendations. Six months ago, Barry left his job as a successful software developer to start a consulting business, a move Tracy viewed as rash, especially during the economic downturn and just after their second child had arrived. Though talented in his work, Barry struggled to follow through on existing contracts, much less generate new clients. In short order, the couple had gone through their savings before turning to their families for support. Barry reportedly acknowledged the need to find a job but faced the same obstacles as he had in finding new clients.
