ABSTRACT
Politics in Practice feature “Help, There’s a Lobbyist in My Campaign!”)
What seems to bother people the most about the influence of special
interests is the idea that the rich and the powerful are doing their
level best to get the government to do what they want it to do. And
truth be told, they are. Bankers, lawyers, CEOs, unions-you name a
powerful special interest group, and chances are they are lobbying for
government to see things their way. Here’s the deal, though: they’re
not the only ones lobbying government. So are hospitals, advocates for
the poor, child welfare organizations, and believe it or not, universities,
colleges, and people trying to keep your tuition costs down. Shouldn’t
abused kids, the sick, and college students get to petition government
for redress of their grievances?
