Look yet again at Example 8-2. The two daggers indicate neighbor tones (NT)—pitches that lie a step (or half-step) above or below a consonant tone and its repetition. Like passing tones, they can be accented or unaccented. Those that lie above the consonant tone are called upper neighbors, and those that lie below it are called lower neighbors.
