ABSTRACT

Measuring the impact of social change is one of the most challenging evaluation activities. An international development project aimed to develop greater participation by citizens in a country that had been involved in conflict and political restructuring. The chapter describes in large companies and organisations the financial and performance data should be recorded by the relevant departments and stored by them or in the organisations Management Information Systems (MIS). Many organisations use dashboards of one kind or another to report results. The Balanced Scorecard is one of these. Where it is being used, or being developed, it signals both an increased awareness of the need to capture and use impact data, and often a maturing culture of accountability. Reputation is very important to most organisations, but to some, it forms a major proportion of the impact outcome data they collect and monitor on a regular basis. Financial data should be the easiest to find.
