ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon the creation of whole-school policy documents on attendance. Clear evidence exists to show that for whole-school approaches to be successful they have to involve the entire staff in a constructive and positive manner. No school will be successful when the staff are pulling in different directions. This is particularly true on attendance strategies as unwilling pupils will quickly take advantage of any staff lapses. Whole-school approaches require dedicated teamwork from the leadership of the headteacher and senior management at the top, down throughout the entire school including form tutors, classroom assistants, secretarial staff and, critically, the education welfare officer.
