ABSTRACT

In extreme youth, I was an assistant editor on a dozen feature lms. With each the editing crew would become jaded from living for months with the project, and then adding music would take us on a whole new journey into the story and its characters. This was always a thrilling revelation.

Spotting for music is the process of viewing the ne cut, deciding where it needs music, and deciding, too, where that music will come from. Some may be popular music chosen to create the atmosphere of a particular time or place. If so, you must acquire its copyright. The rest of the music will need a lm composer, which will be covered later. In any case, as you identify where music should start and stop, and decide the nature of that music, the editor will be making detailed notes in a music cue sheet. This is the same whether you are using pre-recorded music or working with a composer, or both (see p. 456).
