ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the initiatives and efforts to restructure current approaches of teaching history in primary and secondary schools that have taken place in countries that comprised the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia — Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. Within this context, the discussion presents a case study of regional development efforts of new multi-perspective teaching materials and methods within the Joint History Project (JHP), a broader regional long-term initiative of the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe (CDRSEE). Several factors contributed to this selection: (1) it has been one of the longest and most consistent regional efforts in Southeast Europe to revise approaches to teaching history; (2) it epitomizes innovations in pedagogical and curricular approaches; (3) it is a joint regional effort of historians and practitioners in the region; and (4) an assessment that examines the approaches, challenges and achievements of the regional collaboration to develop the JHP history workbooks was recently carried out. 2
