ABSTRACT

Sexual relations between members of staff in a school would generally be seen as their own business. However, even consensual sexual relations between two ‘available’ adults may have consequences for other people in the organisation. For example, there may be conflict of interest issues if a head of department responsible for performance management (or even the timetable) is having an affair with a member of his/her staff. There may also be issues of power and harassment to contend with in non-consensual relations such as line managers harassing staff they manage and staff harassing line managers. (This is not always ‘top-down’. It is not unknown for female managers to be propositioned by male staff they manage).
