ABSTRACT

The impact of the new biotechnologies upon the developed economies is likely to be substantial. Technological change of such magnitude will redefine industrial structures, creating and destroying jobs in the process. In time new industries may emerge, whereas major existing sectors will have to adapt. The particular interest of this chapter is the effect these radical technologies will have upon the structure of the pharmaceutical industry and specifically the way that research is organized therein. However, whether advantage is gained through the organization of research depends upon what impact choices about this have on the research scientists themselves. How scientists are managed thus represents a further concern. Both are vital and necessarily interrelated in delivering successful, innovative products for the firm.
