ABSTRACT

The ideas provided below suggest how Religious Education can introduce Reception class children to notions of right and wrong, and why it is wiser to try to bring about right, or goodness, than wrong, or evil during one’s life. A particularly effective approach is to introduce the children to a variety of rich images and to help them interpret these at ever increasing depths. It must be emphasised that when teachers introduce children to new techniques of reflection in the early years, these can have a profound influence on personality development. Teaching focused in this way should be developed throughout subsequent years (and not only as a part of the individual’s ‘official’ education) because thoughtfulness, assisted by rich imagery, will gradually become part of the personality.
