William Wordsworth’s regional accent meant that water would have been pronounced ‘watter’ in the extract above; chatter’ and ‘water’ represent a natural rhyme. Many poets have embraced the wonderful variation and authenticity that come from accent and dialect. The study of accent and dialect is an important part of knowledge about language ( Chapter 16).
