ABSTRACT

One of the main concerns for early years and primary school teachers is how to help children who struggle with their reading. The ability to read gives access to so many areas of learning. First and foremost, it is important to remember that the reasons for struggling with reading are many and complex. Some people would suggest that the quality of teaching is the main reason why children struggle. However, factors such as confidence, self-esteem and motivation can all be part of the picture. It is also important to remember that there may be contributory physiological problems, such as those affecting eyesight and hearing.
