Assessing reading

Assessment of children’s reading is built on an understanding of reading development. This chapter starts with the importance of one-to-one interaction in assessing reading. It evaluates the importance of understanding children’s reading errors (or miscues) and the continuing influence of Goodman’s theories. We discuss strategies for assessing reading in group situations. The chapter concludes with some refl ections on statutory and standardised tests.
