The development of writing
Historically, the teaching of writing has been much less of a focus than the teaching of reading. However, just as we illustrated for reading, in order to teach writing effectively it is necessary to be aware of how children learn. We return to the evidence from case studies of children ( Chapter 9, ‘The development of reading’) in order to look at writing development. This picture of development is followed by a large section on the teaching of writing, including some of the different views that have been expressed in relation to the importance of creativity, expression and choice.
