Assessing writing

Some of the most important assessment of children’s writing is carried out orally during the process of writing when the teacher sits with the child and gives feedback. This kind of feedback is likely to be most effective if the teacher has a clear idea of how children’s writing should develop ( Chapter 16 ) and has a clear idea about each child as an individual, taking into account motivation to write and understanding of genre. Choices about when and how to give oral feedback are key in supporting a child to make progress as a writer.
