ABSTRACT

In recent times, the turn towards language and practice in IR has produced numerous discourse-oriented approaches to world politics. Though slower in making its way to security studies, there have been some well-known analyses of security as discourse, such as those by David Campbell, Karin Fierke, Jutta Weldes, and the Copenhagen School of security scholars. In TS, however, discourse analysis is relatively new. Therefore, this chapter has two main goals:

To outline some of the main understandings of “discourse” in IR and how some terrorism scholars have utilized discourse analysis in their research.

To indicate how discourse analysis, specifically poststructural or Foucauldian discourse analysis, has been used in security studies and to draw some lessons from it for terrorism scholarship.
