The political economy of defense

It is impossible to understand the politics of defense in the United States without understanding the political economy of defense. Defense policy depends on the resources allocated to the defense budget, and the various categories of defense spending give life (and profits) to a set of interests, notably including the defense industry, that actively participate in the American political process. Indeed, their lobbying efforts help explain both the level of the defense budget and how it is spent.
