ABSTRACT

As seen in the previous chapter, violent crime presents itself in a range of guises. The focus in this chapter is on a particular type of violent crime: those crimes where there is a sexual element attached to the violence so that, in law, there is a sexual offence. Not all sexual offences are violent in a physical sense, which is not to say that they do not bring distress to those involved. For example, exhibitionism (colloquially known as ‘flashing’) may involve a man exposing his genitals to an unsuspecting woman; while voyeurism (‘peeping’) entails spying on an unsuspecting person, often while they are undressing or having sex.
