ABSTRACT

Measurement involves the accurate use of the number system, applied to practical situations. For children who have difficulties in conceptualizing the number system, measurement may prove to be a particular challenge. The child with dyscalculia may have a poor grasp of the order of magnitude of numbers, and as a result find it very difficult to judge the reasonableness of measurement data that they obtain. They often lack good number sense and this can lead to confusions and errors in measurement.

Serena had been asked to draw a plan of a small table, measuring the dimensions with a 1 metre rule. The table was square but Serena recorded the measurements of the sides as 1 metre, 80 metres, 1 metre and 90 metres.
