ABSTRACT
Sustainability is often discussed in terms of functional disciplines (energy, waste, water, etc.), but sustainability in the context of leadership. Leadership defi ned through sustainability provides context for strategy, and can be an accelerator of strategy. Leadership exercised through sustainability can be a framework for guiding cultural reinvention within an organization. Healthcare leaders who integrate sustainability into their priority objectives achieve successful outcomes across a portfolio of programs and services. Successful outcomes achieved through sustainability include improved community relationships, lower long-term operating costs and engaged employees. Sustainability is a
mindset many employees value and will rally behind, especially younger employees.
