ABSTRACT

Dating and classifying Cosmatesque pavements invariably involves a number of problems, both because the work is almost always anonymous, and because of the lack of systematic studies of the topic (2). To attempt to establish a chronology and date Cosmatesque mosaics, it is necessary to bear three aspects in mind: the building, the work contained in it, and the pavement itself. For the first aspect, the building’s architectural historymust be retraced, while in the second stage, it is necessary to determine whether the church contains work signed by the Cosmati masters, and suppose that they were also responsible for the pavement As the third and final stage of dating, a rigorous stylistic and statistical analysis must be carried out of the geometric patterns and designs of the work in question, comparing it with other pavements that have already been dated and attributed.
