ABSTRACT

Hydrology is concerned with the science of water, its occurrence, circulation and distribution, its chemical and physical properties, its relation to the natural environment and its relation to living things, including man. The influence of water in moulding the landscape has been one of the principal concerns of physical geographers (e.g. Leopold, Wolman and Miller, 1964). The distribution of water has been important in the location of human settlements, and in the development of agriculture and industry. In Western Europe and North America the provision of adequate water supplies and the apportionment of water between competing demands are critical problems and ones which may set a limit to further economic developments.
