ABSTRACT

The ritualistic quality of a pilgrimage requires the traveler to pass through different stages, endure trials, and change in the process in order to arrive at the destination. The Bible is replete with examples of pilgrimages and their pilgrims. One could interpret the ejection of Adam and Eve from Eden by God as the beginning of a life-long pilgrimage for all of humanity. Whether Jerusalem or Mecca, Plymouth Rock or the Salt Lake in Utah, these destinations mark the end of historic pilgrimages that still resonate and can, at times, is translated into fruitful internal pilgrimages today for the modern American pilgrim. Like the Catholic who makes a pilgrimage to the Vatican or the Muslim who travels to Mecca, many sports fans make it a lifetime goal to visit their cherished sports shrines. Most obvious are the historic stadiums, such as Fenway Park in Boston or Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
