ABSTRACT

Putting children to work full time, with all the risks to their health and education it involves, is now unacceptable in the West. Childhood in the twenty-first century requires sufficient time for developing a healthy body, going through the school system, and playing among family and friends – without the burden of having to earn one's keep. Some part-time employment may be regarded as acceptable, and even beneficial, but not if it interferes with schooling.
