ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights some of those concepts and methods that are relevant in the production of resources for exploring the urban landscape in alternative ways. It sketches aspirational attributes of mobilised learners and possible implications for the design of mobile learning experiences and touring technologies. These attributes continue to be probed and developed in the design of located learning activities both in our research projects and teaching, and are presented here as theoretical ideas that underpin the methodology for learning-through-touring. The chapter allows learners to draw on the sensory interplay to make imaginative associations between sites in order to make public spaces personal. It also presents the learning-through-touring methodology to argue that the tour guide is expert in drawing on existing knowledge in ways that actively engage participants in generating new meanings, perspectives and understandings.
