ABSTRACT

It was the fi rst day of the school year at Treetop Elementary School. Ms. Goodwin, a kindergarten teacher, enjoyed meeting all of her students as well as the parents and guardians who saw their kids into her classroom. She always felt a little anxious on the fi rst day of school, but for a reason she never quite understood, the challenge of learning to pronounce all of her students’ names was especially nerveinducing to her. The student body at her school was becoming more ethnically and linguistically diverse each year, and she struggled to properly pronounce the names of some of her students. Fully aware of her struggles, she listened closely to how each child’s name was pronounced by the family member who brought her or him to the classroom.
