Recent studies of direct inward investment in the United Kingdom have had little to say about the relative significance of the main processes in the growth of the foreign sector. The paucity of substantive research in this field is su1 prising in view of the fundamental differences between new and acquisition investment, and their quite different implications for national and regional economic development policies.
