ABSTRACT

The 2011 Souris (or Mouse) River 1 Valley Flood is the greatest flood event in the recorded history of Minot, North Dakota, a city that has had its share of floods. When the sirens signaling evacuation went off at 12:57 PM on June 22, 2011, the menacing threat of massive flooding from the Mouse River became a tragic reality. 2 Real-time information about rainfall in Canada affecting river flow was not available, and this adversely impacted notification about the danger. Four days to evacuate suddenly became two days.
