ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns with privatization, commodification and marketization of water-linked processes. As the agenda of marketized water unfolds, a very clear feature is the considerable interest and controversy this has stirred up, particularly in the form of resistance to privatization in many developing contexts. Marketized logics in the water realm are applied very unevenly, as private companies are not asked to pay for pollution of waters in a way that might correspond with payment for water by other consumers. There is considerable evidence that the uptake of governance modalities has been on the rise in the water realm in the past several decades. Many transnational companies have reduced interest in investing in Southern contexts, suggesting yet another evolving pattern in terms of how governance practices change in the contemporary moment. Despite such notable shifts, marketization and commodification remain predominant governance approaches in the water realm.
