ABSTRACT

This chapter examines relating to gender and land with a focus on the South African context. It discusses the research results in relation to land use, rights and institutional dynamics in the study community of Inanda. Case studies and qualitative research in particular are shown to be effective methodological approaches to examine gender and land relations. The chapter shows the importance of qualitative approaches. The qualitative approaches are to analyze the impact of unequal access to, and control over, land rights among women and men in a peril-urban community. The chapter explores the research important gendered aspects of land use and control in the case study community of Inanda. It discusses gender and land relations in peri-urban communities and particularly underlines how access to land in post-apartheid South Africa. Thus, qualitative research techniques are effective in understanding gender and land issues in peri-urban communities in South Africa and other developing contexts as well.
