Japan has long been acutely aware of its vulnerability because of the relatively small size of the nation, the lack of natural resources, a geographic location next to the powerful neighbor China, the opening of Japan under duress with the threat of Western colonialism and aggression, and the industrialization and technological advancement that followed. As a consequence, Japan has become very sensitive to its surroundings and the impact, actual and potential, of developments in the rest of the world.
