ABSTRACT

One may not automatically think of religion and popular music as a topic of interest. Of course, musicologists and historians describe the intricacies of church music, and anthropologists study the ways different cultures generate different styles of religious music. Sociologists of everyday life focus on religion and popular music as two related, sometimes confl icting, but increasingly compatible, sources of meaning. In this chapter, we will explore fi ve different ways popular music and religion relate in everyday life.
