ABSTRACT

Much social science analysis of major aspects of the society reveals the continuing impact and great significance of fi the systemic racism created by these centuries of extreme oppression. This chapter considers briefly some spatial impacts. In its geographical patterns fl the twenty-first century United States demonstrates the impact of this fi oppressive past. Racial separation affects the ways in which white Americans view society, especially on racial matters. The evidence of white denial and ignorance of the reality of US racism is substantial. Social problems textbooks dealing with racial issues often have a section on something like the US "race problem," as do other textbooks such as those used in law school courses on Constitution and racial issues. This "problem" view is similar to the cancer view of racism, in that the problem is considered to be an abnormality in an otherwise healthy system.
