ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, I mentioned that the problem of free will generally concerns whether we have free will. But a lot of philosophers who write about free will discuss whether the concept of free will is compatible with the concept of determinism. Does determinism rule out free will? This might seem to be a question about whether we have free will, but actually, it is its own important question and someone can answer it without answering whether we have free will. It’s not that the question of compatibility is unrelated to the question of whether we have free will, but the two questions are distinct. In order to understand this, we first must discuss what philosophers mean by compatibility.
