ABSTRACT
In the top picture Guillermo, a Latino 2 nd grader, has drawn an experiment he did with worms. He has written the words “dark” and “light,” pointing to the two conditions for which he was testing worm preference. The bottom picture depicts him holding a magnifying glass next to a table with various labeled seeds. Asked to draw and explain himself as a scientist, Guillermo has drawn two instances from his time in his ISLE classroom in which he was testing and developing theories about the phenomena under study.
