ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of key concepts discussed in subsequent chapters of the book. The book identifies the core building blocks of maths that young children need to understand to prepare them for the mathematical learning journey that lies ahead of them. It consists of five main chapters outlining the main areas of maths: Counting and number, Measuring, Data handling, Calculating, and Shape and space. The sixth chapter considers how to support links with parents/carers to ensure children experience meaningful mathematics at home. The book provides the reader with insight into the crucial mathematical learning and experiences that children need to develop and explore in their early years in order to grow into confident and independent mathematicians. It inspires the reader to plan and deliver exciting activities to match children's needs, interests and fascinations, whether they are laying the foundations, beginning to build or building up.
