ABSTRACT

Data handling can at times be overlooked in the maths curriculum. Data handling has three core elements for young children. The first is deciding on the question to be answered and collecting the data, the second is presenting the data and the third is analysing and interpreting the data. The main activity outlined here includes use play/real life situations to pose problems could be simply differentiated to match the needs of children operating at a more advanced level, by introducing other ways to present and organise data such as tally charts, simple tables and lists. Provide sticky notes for them to record their comments about their data sets and to think of questions for others to answer about it. Self-registration activities such as those based around arrival at school/setting or snack times involve children in the data handling process as their own information is sorted. Everyday experiences of data handling sorting books in a book box: stories, non-fiction and poetry.
