ABSTRACT

The job of practitioners is to help parents and carers to inform about how children learn maths and how vital their role is in supporting mathematical learning at home in fun, practical ways that do not require a work book. Invite parents to join in with the typical types of activities that happen each and every day in schools and settings, can be a powerful way of highlighting the maths-rich potential of children natural play and exploration. Arrange a group of story sack makers to create sacks, or alternatively host a session where parents, children and practitioners work together to make sacks for favourite mathematical stories. Build up a collection of mathematical resources such as simple games, puzzles, dominoes and playing cards for parents to borrow to share with their children. Type up rhymes in large text and send these home for parents to learn with their children. Work with parents to brainstorm ideas for mathematical opportunities in everyday experiences.
