ABSTRACT

Discussion of the effects of foreign direct investments amounts to a description of various changes in Swedish industry resulting from direct investments. These changes are not, of course, mutually independent. Technological development can result in better products and more efficient production processes which improve the competitive position of companies, providing opportunities for exports and continued technological development, etc. Even if such effects can be viewed as different aspects of the same phenomenon, we find ourselves obliged to present them separately. The effects of foreign direct investments which we have studied concern technological development, international competitiveness, exports, employment and the structure of the industry. Part Two concludes with an attempt to arrive at a total assessment.
